The coal laden steamer Arctic was up bound in Lake
Huron when, in "heavy weather," the vessel began to founder in 1893.
Although the crew fought to save her, the rapidly rising water continued to
flood the engine room, causing the sinking of the 193 foot ship as the crew
fled her decks. Even with the load of coal, and despite her years of service
on the lakes, she is well intact with a large, unusual brass plate on the
engine with her name chiseled permanently in place, a working steamer of
a bygone era, she is an exciting swim back into history. |
